| Ste. Genevieve Art Guild A non-profit organization, we are a growing, inclusive group of fine artists and arts enthusiasts. We are committed to the arts, as well as the history and legacy of the creative spirits who have lived and worked in this area before us. We welcome new members who are participating artists from any fine arts discipline and those who consider themselves patrons of the arts. We have thespians, musicians, photographers, and graphic artists among our practicing members. We have teachers, business people and laborers among our patrons. You might say, the visual arts and Ste Genevieve have always been together with the native Americans who once populated this area and, more recently, since the early 1800's with the arrival of John James Audubon. From 1930 to 1940, the Ste Genevieve Art Colony and Summer School of Art significantly contributed to twentieth century American art history combining regionalism, social realism and other schools to produce a distinctive body of art, here in the Midwest. The charm of our small town, along the banks of the Mississippi River, appealed to such visual artists as Jessie Beard Rickly, Amie Schweig, Bernard Peters, Thomas Hart Benton, Martyl, Joe Jones, Matthew Zeigler, Roscoe Misselhorn, Charles Rhinehart & others, who all found it a wonderful place to paint. Today's Ste Genevieve Art Guild continues to uphold this tradition. We encourage creativity and emerging talent through our annual events, monthly meetings, educational demos and scholarship fund. We strive to develop activities and programs to enhance the Guild membership and surrounding communities. Our connection to the Ste. Genevieve Artist Colony of the 1930s and 1940s is highlighted in our Promenade des Arts. |
